You don't have to know much to use this camera. However, if you are adapt this camera gives you many features and options to control your picture.

Filming or taking photos is simple.
Many options for lighting and setting to take advantage and one of the most usuful I've found so far is the fluorescent/incandescent lighting features for indoors.

If you use the guide portion, you can also preview up to 4 pictures before snaping the shot.

Purchase 2GB picture card if you want to do videos. A 1GB card only takes 29 minites.

"I haven't encountered any cons, although i did buy a case for it after carrying it around in my pocket and creasing the lens iris, although this didn't hurt anything
a case is also necessary as the lens attracts dust despite the automatic lens cover

i have tested every 8 meg plus compact and this camera has the best macro - sometimes, not always, enabling you to get within an inch of your subject and still get a clear focus

"I just came back from a trip to the Caribbean and it was a blast. Partly because I had fun and partly because this little camera did everything I wanted it to do. It starts up super- fast, takes pictures on the fly when you are on a sightseeing tour, zooms in really close when you can't get there yourself, and best of all, after a five-day trip, I did not have to charge or change the battery once! As a casual picture taker, this camera was wonderful and did exactly what I wanted it to do. I would recommend this camera to anyone.

"Have had a few compact digital cameras. There is usually a trade off between quality of photo, speed, and zoom magnification. The Olympus Stylus 1010 manages to be at (or near) the top in ALL aspects of digital photography for a compact camera. The 7 times optical zoom is excellent. The digital zoom (an item I usually don't care to use) is very noise free IF used in bright light conditions. Small size and large feature set make this a camera that's great to take anywhere. Speed of operation - on,off; between shots; manual/scene set up is very good. Menu system is NOT perfect, but you can set up your own personal choices, and save them for future use. This great for special situations. Most importantly, the quality of reproduction is excellent. Colors are reproduced very well, saturation is just about perfect, sharpness is very good to excellent (depending on exposure used, lighting, etc.). Operation is simple in Auto mode; camera does excellent job on it's own. Ability to use scene modes - over twenty pre-set special conditions - helps novice users. Battery IS proprietary, but can get several hundred (atleast 300 so far) shots off of full charge. Use a second battery and you're set for a day or two between charges (takes about 2 hours to FULLY charge a depleted battery). ONLY slight complaint - unlike previous Stylus units, the 1010 is NOT as tough. Some of the other Stylus units (1030)are drop proof and fully water tight, but they do not have the greater optical zoom. All in all the Olympus Stylus 1010 is an EXCELLENT choice for special occassions, vacations, and just taking photos.
